Samsung regains top spot in the global smartphone market in Q3 2020, shipped 79.8 million units
The worldwide smartphone market showed signs of improvements in the third quarter of this year with growth of 32% Quarter on Quarter (QoQ) in the third quarter of 2020, also the global smartphone market declined 4% year on year.
According to the report of market analysis firm, Counterpoint Research, the smartphone market got a recovery because of the relaxation in the nationwide lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When the unlock begins in top population markets including the U.S., India, and Latin America. However, the smartphone market will take some time to fully recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Eased lockdown conditions in all key markets made way for exports and imports, thus streamlining the supply chain again. Samsung again becomes the leader of the global smartphone market by beating Chinese smartphone maker Huawei. The South Korean tech giant sold 79.8 million units and 47% QoQ and 2% YoY growth. Moreover, this is the highest ever shipment by Samsung in the last three years.
As per the report, Samsung has managed to recover its market share in various regions including India, Western Europe, and LATAM, with the help of new smartphones including the Galaxy Note 20 series, A-series, and mid-range 5G smartphones. In the Indian market, Samsung also surpassed Xiaomi to claim first place.
Chinese smartphone maker Huawei become the runner up in the global smartphone market with 50.9 million shipments, 2% YoY growth, and 47% quarterly growth.
Apple slides at the fourth spot, while iPhone shipments declined 7% YoY during Q3 2020 as the company delayed its annual iPhone launch from Q3 to Q4 of this year. We expect Apple’s performance to bounce back in Q4 2020 with the launch of the 5G-powered iPhone 12 series.

OpenAI eyes AI integration on Samsung phones like Apple Intelligence
Apple collaborated with OpenAI to power Apple Intelligence features. The ChatGPT maker continues to create obstacles for Google. In a recent move, OpenAI discussed a potential AI partnership with Samsung.
TheInformation (via Reuters) reported that OpenAI has recently discussed powering AI features on Samsung-made devices. It seems the ChatGPT-maker wishes an AI partnership with Samsung to expand its reach in multiple folds.
The company is considering developing a web browser to rival Google’s Chrome. OpenAI recently introduced its search engine called SearchGPT. It is available to limited users alongside internal testers and strategic partners.
