Samsung led the global smartphone market with over 75 million shipments in Q1 2021: IDC
Earlier today, IDC announced the results of the global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2021. The report revealed that smartphone manufacturers sold 346 million units in the first quarter with a year-on-year increase of 25.5% globally.
After losing its crown to Apple in Q4 2020, Samsung reclaimed its top place in the global smartphone market with 75.3 million units shipment and 21.8% market share, a 28.8% year-over-year growth. In addition, the US tech giant landed on 2nd with 55.2 million iPhone shipments and 16% of share, a huge 50.4% year over year jump.
By securing an impressive 64.8% YoY growth, Xiaomi secured the third position by shipping 48.6 million phones and achieved a 14.1% market share. Followed by Oppo and Vivo shipped 37.5 and 34.9 million units with 10.8% and 10.1% market share respectively.
Talking about the regional market, every region shows strong growth momentum while the highest growth comes from China and the Asia-Pacific region, which account for about half of global shipments. Furthermore, IDC researchers said that Huawei fell out of the top five for the first time in many years.
IDC’s Nabila Popal said:
“The recovery is proceeding faster than we expected, clearly demonstrating a healthy appetite for smartphones globally.” But amidst this phenomenal growth, we must remember that we are comparing against one of the worst quarters in smartphone history, the first quarter of 2020, the start of the pandemic when the bulk of the supply chain was at a halt and China was in full lockdown.”
