Recently, DigiTimes reported that with the iPhone 13 series, which will launch later this year, Apple will surpass Samsung in terms of purchasing AMOLED displays for smartphones as the next iPhones will reportedly come with flexible AMOLED screens.

With its iPhone 12 series, Apple has adopted flexible AMOLED screens and expected to do the same with the 2021’s iPhone models. The report further suggests that market research firm Omdia estimated that Apple will buy 169 million display panels for the iPhone 13 series this year compared to the 114.5 million panels of last year.

Persons familiar with this matter quoted Omdia’s estimated data and pointed out that the Cupertino-based tech giant expected to increase AMOLED panels for iPhone from 114.5 million in 2020 to 169 million in 2021, while Samsung’s purchases are estimated to rise slightly from 152.3 million to 169 million.

Apart from this, industry insiders believe the Samsung Display will remain the largest AMOLED panel supplier for Apple iPhones in 2021, with an estimated 110 million units. At the same time, Samsung’s rival LG could supply 50 million AMOLEDs and China’s BOE could provide 9 million units.

As per the previous reports, iPhone 13 series may not only use AMOLED screens but the high-end models such as iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are expected to feature LTPO backplane technology. LTPO reduces the power consumption of the display and will increase the refresh rate of future iPhones.
