Around a year after iOS exclusivity, Clubhouse has officially launched for Android-based smartphones earlier this month. However, everyone is well-known for the rapidly rising popularity of this drop in audio chat social media platform, rivals also started updating their functionalities and feature offerings.

In a recent development, Twitter announced that it is expanding the social audio rooms, better known as “Spaces”, which is quite similar to the Clubhouse! So far, you could only join Spaces from Twitter’s Android and iOS applications, but you are now able to join Spaces from desktop and mobile web browsers.

Below, you can see how a Spaces look like on the Twitter web. The first (left) image shows what you will see before joining a Space, while the second (right) displays a Space off to the side so you can continue scrolling through Twitter while you listen.

Twitter Spaces revealed its focus areas:

  • Infrastructure and listening UI that adapts to your screen size
  • Setting reminders for scheduled spaces
  • Accessibility and transcriptions

According to TheVerge sources, “Spaces on the web have a big caveat, though: you can join Spaces, but you can’t host them yourself just yet.”

Over the past few months, Twitter has been rapidly opening up and adding features to compete with dedicated social audio apps Clubhouse and similar features from companies such as Discord and Facebook. Earlier this month, Twitter started rolling out the ability to host Spaces on mobile to anyone with 600 or more followers.
