Samsung’s UTG will help to make Google’s first foldable phone possible!
Developed by Samsung Display, UTG (ultra-thin glass) technology played a key role in making Galaxy foldable smartphones. It is the world’s first flexible glass made of a thin sheet of glass through a process of adding flexibility and increased durability, which is marketed by Samsung Display and Dowoo Insys.
Now, it looks like the South Korean display maker’s UTG technology is going to make Google’s most-awaited foldable smartphone possible as a new report surfaced online that suggests the company has decided to provide its UTG to phone makers other than Samsung.
According to ETNews, Samsung Display is preparing to supply its UTG to other smartphone manufacturers in order to increase its foldable display business. The report further suggests that Samsung’s foldable OLED screen and UTG will be applied together for Google’s first bendable smartphone.
As of now, Samsung Display supplies the ultra-thin glass to only Samsung in order to offer better foldable screen smartphones than others. This technology enables the glass to display a more luxurious feeling than plastic materials because of its excellent aesthetic impression.
Industry insiders believe that the reason behind Samsung Display’s UTG customer expansion is just a hope to grow the foldable display business. In addition to Samsung, the Korean display maker is expected to supply foldable displays to other phone manufacturers from second half of this year as well.
