Q1 2021: Samsung seized global and most regional markets but should worry about some regions
It’s the last month of the 2nd quarter of this year and market research firms are releasing their analysis for the first quarter. In a recent development, a well-known market research firm – Counterpoint Research published its new report, which is related to the global smartphone market shipments.
Beating Apple, Samsung led the global smartphone market in Q1 2021 with the highest smartphone shipments. However, the former sold most of its mobile phones (iPhones) because of the 5G-powered iPhone 12 series. At the same time, the latter achieved significant growth in its market share in European countries.
Counterpoint Q1, 2021 Market Monitor Report Highlights
- Global smartphone shipments rose 20% year on year.
- At the same time shipments have declined 10% quarter-on-quarter.
- In the first quarter of 2021, a total of 354.94 million smartphones was sold.
- India’s smartphone market declined for the second quarter.
- Xiaomi led the Indian market with a 26% market share (growth 8% YoY).
Samsung’s performance in Q1 2021 – Counterpoint
Earlier this year, Samsung introduced its new Galaxy S series flagship smartphones called Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra. The Korean tech giant slightly reduced the pricing of these flagships compared to previous generations that helped to increase its market share.
Talking about the global position, Samsung sold most of the smartphone units in Q1 2021 with a massive 22% market share, followed by Apple (17%), Xiaomi (14%), Oppo (11%), and Vivo (10%). Not surprisingly, the US banned Huawei slipped to 6th and secured just 4% market share internationally.
Regional Smartphone Market Share
- Asia
China-based Vivo led the Asian market with an 18% market share, while Samsung ranked last in the top 5 largest sellers in the biggest region with just 12% of market share.
- Europe
Samsung grabbed the crown of the European smartphone market with an impressive 37% market share.
- North America
In North America, the Cupertino-based company sold most of the units and achieved 55% of the total market share. Meanwhile, Samsung ranked second with just 28% shipments.
- LATAM
Samsung secured a 42% market share in the Latin America region, while Motorola grabbed 2nd spot with 22% share.
- Middle East
In Middle East countries, Samsung sold most of the phones, followed by TECNO, Xiaomi, iTel, and Oppo.
