There is a growing possibility that Samsung will pass the top spot in the market for the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) to Apple. In the first half of this year, when new iPhones were not released, Apple’s Apple OLED panel purchase has already surpassed Samsung.

According to market research firm UBI Research and Stone Partners, Apple panels had the highest number of shipments of OLED panels of Smartphones with 60 to 64 million units in the first half of this year.

And the second place in the deployment of Samsung panels with 55 to 56 million units. Apple’s OLED Panel uses only the most expensive OLED panels. In the case of Samsung, flexible OLEDs are used in high-end products, and low-cost OLEDs are used in moderate smartphones.

On the other hand, Samsung unveiled its flagship series Galaxy S21 and Galaxy A series in the first half of the year, but it appears the sale did not meet expectations. Among the 55 to 56 million smartphone OLED panels sent by Samsung in the first half of the year, the flexible OLEDs were 13 to 14 million units and the solid OLEDs were 42 million units.

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 13 series in the third quarter. At present, Apple is said to have placed orders for parts of the iPhone 13 series at 90 million units, 20% more than last year (75 million units).

The new premium brands are being watched by Samsung in the second half folding phones such as Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. It is known that Samsung sets its goal of delivering two models this year to six to seven million units.

The industry expects Apple’s OLED panel to be 170 million units and the Samsung Galaxy OLED panel will demand 160 million units annually this year. In third place is Xiaomi, a Chinese company with 70 million units.

At the moment, Apple plans to release the iPhone 13 series with four versions in the second half of the year. The screen size of a product is the same as its predecessor. The low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) required to support the renewal rate of 120 Hz (Hz) is first used for two types of high-resolution (pro). This panel is only provided by Samsung Display.
