Google started signing out free accounts from Hangouts on Android and iOS

Last year, Google set up retirement plans for classic Hangouts for all users. At the time, a giant search said free Hangouts users would be migrated to the free version of Google Chat in the first half of 2021. As promised, Google has now started signing up for free accounts from Hangouts, marking another step towards service migration and inevitable end.

According to a 9to5Google report that Hangouts users on Android and iOS are starting to see information within the app that tells them to switch to Google Chat. Google has been slowly killing various aspects of Hangouts over the past few months. But this is the latest major step since Google announced its plan to shut down the service last year.

A blue banner appears at the top of the Hangouts app, “Hangouts is being replaced by Google Chat”. It also displays the “Switch to Chat in Gmail” button. When you click on it, it takes you out of Hangouts and takes you to the integrated Gmail Chat experience. Google claims that all of your previous Hangouts chats (June 2020) will appear in Google Chat, while the history of older chats will be made “available later.”

Once signed out, you will not receive new notifications from the Hangouts app. However, 9to5Google notes that Google is not completely shutting down the app for now as you can continue to use the mobile app by re-signing your Google Account.

A similar notification is displayed when trying to access the Hangouts web version. When you click the “Open Chat” button, you are taken to a private Google Chat web experience.
