Google makes new UI changes in Chrome’s downloads and bookmarks menus

With the first stable release of Android 12 on the corner, Google has worked hard to update its apps to be in tune with the new Material You language. The company has already released minor UI updates for many of its apps, including Chrome for Android, which received strong theming support earlier this month.

Now, the company is testing additional features in the browser that give the download panel and bookmarks a modern look. The latest Google Chrome design updates give the browser download panel and bookmark a completely new look.

Instead of the gray pop-up at the bottom, the current download is displayed as a toast at the top of the screen in the new build. Completed downloads also appear in the same location on the round card with the “Open” button. Bookmarking pages also receive design updates, with larger square icons and more space between items.

The new UI download panel is currently automatically enabled for most Chrome users using the latest Canary browser configuration. If you don’t see it yet, you can enable it by browsing the “show download progress message” flag in chrome://flags.

The user interface of bookmark updates, however, are not automatically enabled in Canary builds but can be achieved by hovering over the “enable visual bookmark” flag.

With new design changes limited to the current Chrome Canary release, we can’t be sure if Google will eventually release you with a stable release or not. We’ll have to wait and see if Google decides to adopt this new download panel design and bookmarks.
