Samsung plans to launch a 576MP camera sensor in ∼ 2025
Back in 2019, Samsung introduced the world’s first mass-produced 108-megapixel smartphone camera sensor, which was debuted with the Galaxy S20 Ultra and Galaxy S21 Ultra. Going forward, the manufacturer unveiled the first 200-megapixel camera sensor for future smartphones.
Meanwhile, the expectations of Samsung seem too high as the recent report claims that the massive 576-megapixel camera sensor is on the way and likely to make its entry in not more than 4 years. To be mentioned, last year, Samsung revealed that it wants to develop a 600-megapixel image sensor.
Recently, at the SEMI Europe Summit, Haechang Lee, Senior VP Automotive Sensor, Samsung Electronics, used an interesting slide in his speech, which shows an overview of camera sensor pixel size and resolution trends since 2000.
Furthermore, it showcases that Samsung plans to launch a 576 million pixel camera sensor sometime in 2025, however, this sensor may not feature in smartphones. In contrast, the company’s upcoming 576-megapixel camera sensor appears to be developed for automobiles.

Earlier, Samsung Newsroom’s editorial post mentioned that the resolution of human eye matching is about 500 million pixels, and the company hopes to surpass this level. With its 576 million pixel sensor, it may achieve this feat, but this does not necessarily mean that it will match the smartphone.
On the other hand, such sensors can be used in autonomous vehicles, drones, and medical equipment. No doubt, autonomous vehicles also need super-powerful chips to process images and videos from such high-resolution sensors.
However, Samsung’s 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN2 sensor will be a good choice for smartphones because of its large pixel-size (2.8µm), dual-pixel autofocus, excellent HDR processing, 4K 120fps and 8K 30fps video recording, and low noise. It is reported that Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ may use this 50-megapixel sensor.
