Samsung confirmed Sony’s PS5 M.2 update will enable SSD storage expansion

On September 14, Samsung confirmed that Sony will be releasing a firmware update for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console, which will enable the extension of the M.2 SSD storage extension.

The company did not disclose the exact launch date, but Sony ended the silence and announced that the much-anticipated firmware update is out of beta categories and will be live on PS5 tomorrow, September 15th.

With the new update, PS5 owners can install the M.2 SSD and expand the internal storage. And while PS5 owners may not be able to play games without an external drive, they will be able to save and play them from the M.2 SSD.

There are some requirements, and Sony recommends an SSD that can reach a successive learning speed of at least 5,500MB/s. Alternatively, Samsung recommends a 980 PRO SSD with consecutive read speeds of up to 7,000MB/s.

The 980 PRO is probably one of the best SSDs on the market for PS5 users, and that Samsung talked about firmware updates a day before Sony made its announcements could be a bit confusing. It suggests that the two companies may have worked together to ensure compatibility between their products, which is why Samsung had an internal scoop.

If you want to buy the 980 PRO in anticipation of the upcoming PS5 firmware update, Samsung is currently selling its PCIe 4.0 SSD at a discount. The 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB 980 PRO models are now available at Samsung’s online store for $89.99, $109.99, $189.99, and $379.99, respectively.

Delivery dates can vary depending on SSD storage capacity, so be aware of that if you want to use the M.2 scale on your PS5 as soon as possible.
