Google won’t offer four Android OS upgrades to Pixel 6 series
Just recently, Google officially launched the Pixel 6 series at the Pixel Fall Launch event. This range includes two models – Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro that is equipped with the company’s custom-developed Tensor chip as well as the latest Android 12 out of the box.
Ahead of the Pixel 6 launch, it was rumored that Google will extend the software updates support. Several blogs and tipsters claimed that the upcoming Pixel flagships will get four years of major OS upgrades and five years of regular security patches.
Meanwhile, it looks like the Android upgrade support will remain three years for the Pixel 6 series too as the Google support page doesn’t showcase such promise for four major updates.
According to the latest news via ArsTechnica [Source/Via], Google said that the Pixel 6 series will get 3 years of major Android updates, on par with the company’s current Qualcomm-powered Pixels.
Here’s what Google said
“We build Pixel phones to get better over time with software and feature updates, so starting with Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro Pixels will now receive security updates for at least 5 years. Users will still get at least 3 years of OS updates, after which we’re committing to ensure that Pixels will stay up-to-date and secure. The frequency and categories of updates will depend on the capabilities and needs of the hardware.”
Samsung could offer four OS upgrades
Well, Samsung and several other Chinese OEMs have promised to provide at least three years of major Android OS upgrades to their flagship smartphones and Google is not extending its software support limit. Samsung can take advantage of this time by announcing four Android upgrades with the Galaxy S22 series next year.
