WhatsApp will soon ask users to verify their identity in order to pay on the platform. Recently, new strings seen in the latest release of WhatsApp beta suggest that the messenger will require users to download confirmation documents in order to continue using payments on WhatsApp.

At present, when you set up WhatsApp Pay in India, the service only verifies the phone number connected to your bank account to enable UPI-based transactions. In Brazil, the messenger uses Facebook Pay to verify credit or debit cards for users to make payments easier. Currently, the app does not require users to submit any authentication documents to make payments.

The latest WhatsApp v2.21.22.6 beta (via-XDA) includes a few new strings that suggest that users may need to submit ID verification documents in order to continue using payments. While it is not sure why WhatsApp would require users to verify their identity in order to make payments.

WhatsApp may request ID verification in order to make payments:

Some UPI-based applications, such as Google Pay and PhonePe, do not require users to submit any transfer or refund documents. However, wallet applications such as PayTM request KYC verification in accordance with RBI guidelines. This leads us to believe that WhatsApp may be working for the WhatsApp Pay wallet, which will require users to submit ID documents.

WhatsApp is yet to issue an official announcement about this change. As new cables have recently entered the beta version, it may be some time before the company discloses any details.
