Samsung and LG Display to develop two types of OLEDs tech for Apple’s next iPad

Samsung and LG Display are jointly developing two types of OLEDs for Apple’s next iPad. According to a recent report from Korean media, LG is developing a 12.9-inch model panel between Apple’s 12.9-inch and 11.0-inch OLED iPads, which is expected to be released in 2024.

And the other 11.2-inch model OLED is jointly developed by LG Display and Samsung Display. As per the report, Apple’s first two OLED iPads to be powered by a ‘two-stock tandem’ structure, which consists of two layers of light-emitting film and a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT).

LG Display was able to conquer the baseline by developing both the 12.9-inch and 11.0-inch iPad OLED. In Apple’s iPad OLED prototype test, it was found that the LG display scored higher than the Samsung display.

So far, the Samsung display has been the market leader in the Apple iPhone OLED market, followed by the LG display. LG Display is working to develop two types of iPad OLED, ahead of its experience in two-stock tandem mass production.

Samsung Display has been developing two-stock tandem technology since the end of last year. The T2 is expected to be the second product of Samsung’s display ‘T series’, a two-stock tandem OLED material set, targeting the iPad OLED application. The target time for mass production of the T2 is 2024 when the first OLED iPad is released.

Both the Samsung display and the LG display are expected to massively produce 12.9-inch and 11.0-inch iPad OLEDs in the 6th generation (1500x1850mm) OLED line.

Samsung Display is expected to make the iPad OLED by rebuilding part of the 6th generation A3 line in Assange in southern Chungchiong province. Line of Balance (LoB) work is expected to take place to realize the two-stock tandem OLED.

In addition, the iPad OLED has the potential to implement 8.5th generation (2200x2500mm) OLED technology for IT in the future, which is currently being developed by LG Display and Samsung Display.
