Recently, at an online conference, Samsung was selected as an official member of the Technical Overseas Committee (TOC) for the O-RAN Open Source Project, the top decision-making body of the O-RAN Software Community (SC).

Starting this April and extending to 2023, Samsung will play a key role in decision-making by the TOC of the O-RAN Open Source Project.

Through its collaboration with the O-RAN Alliance, Samsung is expanding its influence in the open RAN domain, an area currently in the spotlight due to its potential to be the next-generation Radio Access Network (RAN) technology.

Thanks to this pioneering work, Samsung, along with 11 other companies, has been elected an official member of the TOC, the top voting body of the O-RAN SC.

Setting global specifications and standards for open source software

The O-RAN SC TOC has six global telecommunications operators – AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telecom, Orange, NTT DoCoMo, and TIM – and 6 telecommunications equipment and component providers – Samsung Electronics, Ericsson, Nokia, Winddriver, Radis, and Viavi.

The O-RAN SC is sponsored by the O-RAN Alliance, which issues specifications and develops and releases its specification compliant software as open source.

With this secured TOC membership and open source leadership, Samsung plans to continue to strengthen its advanced research in Network AI (Artificial Intelligence)/ML (Machine Learning) based on O-RAN technology.
