Samsung SDI expanding its first battery plant in North America

Samsung SDI will start a joint battery business with Stelantis, the world’s fourth-largest company. This is the first time Samsung SDI has established a North American battery manufacturing facility with a joint venture. The investment is expected to be at least a few billion KRW.

According to the latest report, Samsung SDI has a battery pack plant in Michigan, and Illinois emerged as a candidate as it is known that Samsung SDI has updated it. Samsung SDI has factories in Ulsan, Xi’an, China, and God, Hungary.

Samsung SDI officially announced its entry into the US last month in its second-quarter announcement. According to the US-Canada-Mexico trade agreement, which will take effect in 2025, the U.S. Local production of parts for electric vehicles will be inevitable in the U.S., and the investment will be completed this year.

Earlier, the company announced that it will be partnering with LG Energy Solutions in the United States. Stelantis has partnered with LG Energy Solutions and Samsung SDI to provide suitable batteries for the type of car. It is known that they will be getting offers of LG battery pack and prismatic battery for Samsung SDI.

Samsung SDI is the only Korean battery company that did not have a battery production plant in the United States. Samsung SDI is also promoting the establishment of a cylindrical industry with Rivian, a new manufacturer of electric vehicles in the US. Rivian is reportedly improving local production in response to the growing demand for cylindrical batteries.
