Samsung patents dual-UDC smartphone for secure facial recognition

Last year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 3 smartphone featuring its first Under Display Camera technology. Now it seems like a single UDC is not enough for Samsung as it is working on Dual-UDC technology for future Galaxy smartphones.

The company filed a new patent at KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) that describes the new dual-UDC technology in March 2021 while Dutch publication GalaxyClub spotted that it was published last week.

According to the patent description, Samsung dual-UDC technology uses two hidden cameras to scan your face from two different angles at the same time. This approach will reportedly make facial recognition on smartphones more secure and accurate because in doing so your face is captured more deeply.

In addition to this, the patent documentation also mentions that the dual-UDC setup would be capable of measuring the user’s eye pupils for improved biometric security. Since our pupils change size depending on the light, Samsung will use this as a verification tool.

The new technology will change the screen brightness to determine the reaction of pupils so that other people can not unlock your phone through your picture, providing customers with a more secure facial unlock.

Samsung Dual-UDC coming to future smartphones:

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was the first Samsung phone to introduce under-display camera technology. The company also brought UDC to Galaxy Z Fold 4 and now the comply is also planning to expand it to Galaxy S series phones.

The Korean tech will launch Galaxy S23 series phones in early 2023 but these devices will unlikely equip such a UDC system. However, it’s possible that the 2024’s Galaxy S24, at least the Galaxy S24 Ultra will come with UDC technology.

On the other hand, the dual-UDC is far away to reach the devices. Currently, there’s no telling if Samsung is actively working on it or has patented the technology for possible future use.
