OnePlus challenges Samsung with 4 OS updates for all flagships!

Surprisingly, OnePlus comes up to challenge Samsung’s after-sales OS and security updates dominance. At an OxygenOS Open Ears Forum in London, OnePlus confirmed (via 9to5Google) that “selected devices launched in 2023” will now get 4 OS updates and five years of “regular” security patches.

This sounds exactly the same Samsung is currently offering to all of its premium and select mid-range Galaxy devices released in 2021 onwards. Also, it’s worth mentioning that the Chinese phone maker revealed that the team behind OxygenOS is already working on future updates; OxygenOS 13.1 and 14.

Up from Google, Samsung, earlier this year, announced that flagship Galaxy devices launched in and after 2021 will be eligible for up to 4 major One UI updates and up to five years of regular security patches. OnePlus appears to be doing the same as its upcoming OnePlus 11 is likely to initiate the new 4 OS updates policy.

With expanding Android and security updates lifespan, OnePlus is trying to lessen its consumers’ frustrations amid buggy and delayed updates and the cancellation of the “unified platform” with Oppo’s ColorOS. The company now appears to be preparing to bring advancements to its own software department.

Statement:

This new update policy will give users access to the latest security and functional features required to power OnePlus’ signature fast-and-smooth experience throughout the lifetime of the phone.”

At present, OnePlus offers bimonthly security updates to all eligible devices, which may turn to “regular/monthly” patches in near future. When asked, Chen confirmed that a bimonthly update cadence will still be adhered to when pushing monthly security patches to OnePlus devices.

Well, Samsung is still ahead of OnePlus as the former OEM joined one year older flagship lineup in the new policy, while the latter is making announcements for products that will launch next year. As of now, there’s nothing good news for flagship phones that OnePlus sold in the past including the OnePlus 7, 8, 9 and 10.
