Samsung beats IBM and its 29 years of patent dominance

Decades after, the US patent chart got a new leader and it can not be other than Samsung, and naturally, IBM, which was the country’s patent filing leader for about three decades, slips to No. 2 in the list.

According to the report, Samsung Electronics’s US patent count recorded 8,513 in 2022, at the same time, IBM, a decades-old leader’s count declined 44% to 4,743 patents in the same period.

Since Samsung is one of the largest innovation hubs in the tech industry, IBM’s strategic changes reportedly gave it chance to snatch the crown of the United States patent, as per Harrity LLP’s Patent 300 list.

The list also shows that Samsung has constantly issued over 8,000 new patents a year since 2017, as a runner-up. Besides, the company was awarded patents on visual display systems and voice communication many times.

The Korean tech giant is continuously extending its R&D to make semiconductors and tech advanced. Whereas, IBM radically decreased its focus on semiconductors and hardware memory patents.

IBM is said to have had the highest number of patents for the last 29 years in the United States. It changed its strategy in 2020 and begin focusing on the IP portfolio and freeing engineers from the patent process.

“Patent filings in china have been exploding for years. So as more of these companies do business in the US we would expect the numbers to increase here as well,” said, Harrity analytics chief Rocky Berndsen.
