Samsung India in trouble over $212 million customs duty evasion: Report

DRI, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence of India accused Samsung of evading customs duty by misclassifying a product.

The Indian agency has also issued a show-cause notice, asking why DRI should not recover $212 million as duty alongside interest, reports EconomicTimes.

Going further with the report, DRI found the local unit of South Korea’s Samsung Electronics guilty of evading import taxes worth INR 1,728.47 crore ($212 million) by misclassifying a product.

The Indian agency said that Samsung India misclassified networking devices called remote radio heads to avail undue exemption of basic customs duty.

India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence sent a show cause notice to Samsung and PricewaterhouseCoopers Pvt Ltd (PwC), which was hired to classify the network equipment.

Samsung has a great reputation in the Indian market, at the same time, it’s a great land for the company for manufacturing and sales. At present, the company has not commented on the matter.
