Samsung Galaxy S23 misses the world’s largest ultrasonic fingerprint sensor

Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max fingerprint sensor is not used in the upcoming Samsung flagship smartphones. It appears that Samsung is skipping the world’s largest ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor and continuing to use the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 in the Galaxy S23, S23 Plus and S23 Ultra.

A recent core specs leak revealed the camera sensors, processor and fingerprint sensor details of the Galaxy S23. The data indicates that the Galaxy S23 smartphone still uses Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2. Notably, this sensor is used by Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S21 series as well.

Several vendors already debuted the 3D Sonic Max fingerprint sensor with their smartphones such as iQOO and Vivo in early 2022 itself. However, there’s no information why Samsung is still not opting for the largest sensor in its topmost flagship line.

Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2

Back in January 2021, Qualcomm introduced the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2, which is 50% faster and 77% larger than Gen 1 [Gen 1 was 4x9mm (surface area 36mm2), whereas Gen 2 expands 8×8 (64mm2)]. Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor is also ultra-thin, measuring a scant .2mm.

The first-gen 3D Sonic Sensor was featured in several Samsung flagships including the Galaxy S10, Note 10, S20, and Note 20 series. And the 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 debuted with Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S22 series, with the next addition being the Galaxy S23 series.
