In 2022, Samsung partnered with Oscar-winning filmmaker Charlie Kaufman to make a short film using Galaxy S22 Ultra. Now, the company has made a similar partnership with Director Na Hong-jin to release a short film “Faith” entirely shot on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Samsung and Director Hong Jin unveiled the premiere of the movie Faith on 22nd February 2023 at Megabox COEX. The preview was attended by approximately 300 people, including journalists, Galaxy fans, and film fans.

This is a short film from Na Hong-jin, who is famous for movies like The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing. The main highlight of this movie is that it has been shot from the Ultra model of the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S23 series.

The director of this film has highly praised the camera of the Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone, especially its nightography feature that captures sharp details even in dark environments.

“Faith” is a short thriller film of 11 minutes. It clearly shows the destructive power and relativism of belief through the story of the protagonist following faith. In this work, director Na Hong Jin has a unique mise-en-scene, which uses dark images and suspenseful elements.

In response to the host’s question about his shooting experience with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, director Na Hong-jin said, “It is true that I had a lot of worries as I had to shoot the movie with a smartphone. I came to know that I have a level that can be used for filming. Contrary to what I was concerned about, I was able to create a work that exceeded expectations by capturing all the details such as faces and props.”

He further added, “I learned how subtle the Galaxy S23 Ultra is at capturing details in the dark. So, I specifically asked the art director to handle the props on set with care. There were real objects on display on the shelves. When editing and viewing the effects, each line of the prop is expressed very delicately, and there is no difference compared to professional shooting equipment.”

“The amazing performance of the Galaxy S23 Ultra was confirmed once more in the focus, which was alive despite the constant camera movement. It also clearly captured the focus beyond the lens of the glasses worn by the actor.”

When asked about the experience of filming with a smartphone, Choi Moo-seong said, “ It was definitely a new experience. Unlike a regular movie set, the smartphone camera was not easily visible, so it was easy to immerse yourself in acting. ”

Actor Go Joon also said, “ I was able to adapt quickly, just like any other movie set, and I felt comfortable throughout the filming because there was little pressure on the big camera. I saw it for the first time on the screen today, and the sense of speed was overwhelming, and the sense of immersion throughout the movie was great, ” he said in a review.

In an interview with a newsroom after the premiere, Director Nahong Kim said, “If you use the mobility and functionality of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, it’s good enough. You can try it.” When asked if he would like to use new devices such as smartphones to make films in the future, he said, “It would be interesting if the user could change the lens of the smartphone to suit various situations. It would be nice if the functions actually needed in the movie scene were applied.”
