On the occasion of World Water Day 2023, Samsung announced that it has obtained the highest level of “Platinum” certification from the “AWS (Alliance for Water Stewardship)” for sustainable water management at its Hwaseong semiconductor campus.

Back in 2020, Samsung’s Hwaseong Campus achieved both international certifications that verify water resource management capabilities for the first time in the industry by receiving the AWS certification following the “water usage reduction” certification awarded by the British Carbon Trust.

Alliance for Water Stewardship

AWS is a water management certification body established by international organizations such as UN Global Compact Network (UNGC) and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and evaluates whether companies are building a comprehensive water resource management system.

AWS certification is divided into three stages from Platinum, the highest grade, to Gold, and Core, depending on the evaluation results of a total of 100 items, including stable water management, water pollutant management, water hygiene, influence on aquatic ecosystems in basins, and governance establishment.

The Korean tech giant plans to expand the acquisition of AWS certification not only for the Hwaseong Campus but also for domestic and overseas semiconductor business sites. Adrian Sim, CEO of AWS, said, “Samsung Electronics Hwaseong Campus is the first case in Korea to obtain a Platinum rating and “will be.”

Return of otters

To march World Water Day 2023, Samsung Elec & Semiconductor release a special animated ESG video. This animation illustrates a revitalized Osan Stream, restored by a rich amount of clean water discharged from Samsung’s semiconductor site, enabling the return of otters and an improved biological ecosystem.
