Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 smartphones will reportedly pack batteries manufactured by LG Energy Solutions. Starting the Galaxy Z Fold3, the company has been using batteries made by LG, completing three years in a row.

According to TheElec report, Samsung MX will be using batteries supplied by LG Energy Solutions in its upcoming Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5. Both phones are likely to feature two batteries (primary & secondary) due to their foldable form factor.

“Samsung Electronics’ MX division (mobile) is known to use battery cells supplied by LG Energy Solutions for foldable phones such as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 (tentative name),” says TheElec sources.

The estimated battery cost is $10-15, hence, the total cost may be about $30 for each model. Meanwhile, LG couldn’t be going to the exclusive battery supplier for next-gen Galaxy foldables as Samsung SDI and China-based ATL are also in the supply chain. For some models, China’s BYD is also supplying batteries.

ITM Semiconductor was in charge of the battery protection circuit and packaging. The battery cells are expected to be produced at LG Energy Solutions Nanjing plant, moved to ITM Semiconductor’s local plant in Vietnam, assembled with protection circuits, etc., and supplied to Samsung’s smartphone plant.

Primary and secondary cell

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 batteries are divided into primary and secondary. As the screen is foldable, large and small-capacity batteries are used separately, it’s like having two batteries. However, the capacity is not much different from the previous model.

The battery occupies the largest area in a smartphone as a single component excluding the display panel. Looking at the shape, size, and capacity, you can gauge the design direction of the smartphone. Nowadays, smartphones, tablets, and laptops follow the “I” shape installation trend; AP and memory.
