Apple cuts iPhone 15 display reliance on Samsung
Apple appears to be lowering its reliance on Samsung Display as LG Display will reportedly supply 50 percent more OLED display panels than last year to the iPhone 15 series. With boosting LG Display orders for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max panels, Apple is balancing the supply chain.
According to ETNews (via SFCNation), Samsung rival LG Display is expected to supply 50 percent more OLED display panels than the last year’s Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models, which are scheduled to be released in September 2023.
Lowering reliance
The increase in LG Display’s orders draws attention as it means an expanded role in Apple’s supply chain. In the meantime, Apple has been highly dependent on Samsung to the extent that Samsung Display supplies 70% of iPhone panels.
In order to stabilize its supply chain, the iPhone maker will probably actively utilize LG Display OLED display panels. BOE, another Apple iPhone partner, is known to be experiencing quality problems, creating a favorable environment for LG Display.
LG got an order of 32.4 million units (6.1-inch and 6.6-inch OLED) to supply from May to the end of the year. This year, the US tech giant aims to produce 90 million iPhone 15 models (all four variants) with the proportion of high-end models is 60%.
Korean media reports that LG Display seized an opportunity in the small and medium-sized OLED display market. As the number of orders received has increased, it is noteworthy whether the improvement in performance will be accelerated.
Last year, the company supplied OLED for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, it will supply displays for two models – iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, this year. All of them are LTPO OLEDs, which are high-value-added panels.
