Google is internally testing the App Pair feature on Android 14, which Samsung brought to the very first version of One UI. Recently, the company introduced its first foldable phone and tablet namely the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet, respectively.

As the official launch goes near, Google continues to test new features for these devices. One UI always remains the king of innovation when it comes to Android skins and this time, it’s an inspiration for crafting useful features like App Pair for large-screen Google devices.

With One UI 2, Samsung re-introduced the ability to create App Pair through the Edge Panel. With One UI 3.1.1, based on Android 11, the company made it easier to setup App Pair, directly from the split screen view. This feature got further enhancements with One UI 4.1.1 and One UI 5.1.

It’s expected that the Google Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet will get support for App Pair creation with future updates. It could probably go official with Pixel Feature Drop or the major Android 14 upgrade, scheduled to release by August this year.

Mishaal Rahman discovered Android 14 prepares to let you save an ‘app pair’ that launches side-by-side in split-screen mode. In the second Beta, a new launcher flag has been added, and when enabled, surfaces a “save app pair” menu item in the context menu of split-screened apps in the recents overview.

Presently, tapping “save app pair” doesn’t work, but when the feature is ready, it’s expected to allow you to add a shortcut to the home screen to launch two apps in split-screen mode. This feature may also be available for regular Pixel smartphones with the Android 14 update.
