A person familiar with the matter revealed that Google killed a multi-year AR glasses development project Iris earlier this year. Instead, there are reports that Google has been focusing on building Android XR software with hopes to license to other AR headset makers.

According to the report, Google is developing the software using a prototype platform internally known as “Betty.” One employee described the glasses platform as “Android for AR.” Insiders said Google leadership’s constant shifting of Iris’ strategy led to a constant reorientation of the team.

It is worth mentioning that two Google employees said that Google may re-launch the Iris glasses one day and that some teams are still experimenting with AR technology, and some teams have been transferred to develop software platforms and participate in Samsung’s cooperation projects.
