For the first time, Samsung held its Galaxy Unpacked in South Korea to unveil new foldable phones. Regarding this, Wall Street Journal analyzed the strategy and reasons behind the location shift.

WSJ reports that Samsung Elec’s decision to launch hold Unpacked for the first time in Korea indicates that the company is “facing a turning point.” “Nowhere has the device been embraced as widely as Korean consumers.”

A spokesperson for Samsung revealed that the company is fully committed to the foldable category, saying, “Annual sales of foldable phones are increasing in Europe, China, and Southwest Asia along with the Korean market, and have surpassed sales of the Galaxy Note.”

Samsung plans to expand its premium smartphone customer base through technological innovation in the field of foldable phones, which Apple has not yet entered. Earlier, there have been reports that Apple is considering developing a foldable product, but Apple has not made the development of a foldable phone official.

Canalys reported that Samsung accounted for more than 80% of the 14.2 million foldable phones shipped worldwide last year. Most of the other share was occupied by Chinese brands. However, Counterpoint Research predicted that the demand for foldable phones would exceed 100 million units by 2027.
