YouTube brings 1080p Premium quality to web and TV devices

YouTube has officially launched its upgraded 1080p Premium tier for desktop web users. Initially introduced for iOS devices, this premium tier enhances video quality by improving bitrate rather than resolution, resulting in sharper visuals and increased detail.

The 1080p Premium option is now accessible on the web, even for non-Premium users, though attempting to use it prompts a subscription notice.

Additionally, the upgrade can be accessed on select TV devices, such as non-Android-based Chromecasts and gaming consoles, although specifics are undisclosed. This expansion marks YouTube’s first step beyond iOS devices for 1080p Premium. While some Android users shortly experienced an improved bitrate in June, as it is not available widely yet.
