Gmail boosts security with addition of ‘Verify it’s you’ prompt

Google has added a new security feature to Gmail that will prompt users to verify their identity when they attempt to perform sensitive actions. These actions include creating, editing, or importing filters, adding a new forwarding address, or enabling IMAP access. Hackers could exploit these features to access users’ emails.

The new “Verify it’s you” prompt will evaluate the session that is attempting to use a sensitive action and if it is supposed to be risky, it will prompt the user for 2-Step Verification (2SV) or another second/trusted-factor method.

If verification fails or is not completed, the user will receive a “Critical security alert” on their trusted devices, informing them of the attempted breach and allowing them to close their accounts.

This new security feature will be available to all personal Google Accounts and Workspace customers where Google is the identity provider. It will start gradually from August 23, 2023.
