Google Pixel 8 to offer more Android and security updates than Samsung Galaxy flagships

Google is reportedly planning to make the Pixel 8 and Galaxy 8 Pro more competitive by increasing the number of OS updates these phones will receive. The Pixel 8 series, powered by Google’s own Tensor chip, will surpass Samsung’s four-year policy on flagships and match Apple’s record of updates.

Currently, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, which are the first devices to use Tensor, get three years of major Android OS updates and two more years of security patches. This is similar to Qualcomm-powered Pixel phones from previous years, but less than Samsung’s promise for its flagship Galaxy devices.

Google hopes to change this with the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, which are expected to launch in late 2023 or early 2024. Google will likely plan to extend the OS update promise for Pixel 8 series and future devices by at least five years, which would put them at the top of the Android ecosystem and let them compete with the iPhone.

By boosting the longevity of its phones, Google will not only improve the user experience but also challenge the other smartphone maker companies in the market.
