Samsung 7nm Edge: Outpacing Huawei in Semiconductor Competition

Published

on

Production cost of Samsung’s 7nm EUV chip is over 100 times cheaper than Huawei’s new 7nm chip. This huge difference in production cost puts Huawei significantly behind in cost competitiveness.

TechInsights estimates Huawei’s Kirin 9000s chip that powers Mate 60 Pro was manufactured on the 7nm process. SMIC likely invested a significant amount of money in the process to produce good quality Kirin 9000s.

Compared to Samsung’s technology, which was upgraded by being the first in the world to apply 7nm EUV to foundry mass production in 2019, it is concluded that it will be significantly behind in cost competitiveness.

It is speculated that strong support from the Chinese govt will compensate for their costs and provide strong support. There’s a significant possibility that China will develop 3nm and 4nm chips without EUV in the future.
