Baik told SamMobile that Samsung has been actively discussing what the company should be doing with regards to long-term security updates beyond the five years of support that it currently provides.

In addition, he mentioned that this vision of supporting devices for longer aligns with Samsung as well and that in light of new regulations coming up, Samsung is preparing to go beyond its current period of five years of support.

Currently, the South Korean tech giant is committing four years of Android upgrades and five years of security patches. This policy applies on all of the company’s flagship devices, while select mid-range Galaxy phones are also included.

For Pixel 8 and later, the search engine giant pledged 7 years of OS upgrades support, which is first of its kind in Android world. It’s even beyond what Apple offers to iPhones, and Samsung rendered far behind after this, offering 4 OS plus 5 years of patches.
