ARM has “an audacious plan to have the best smartphone CPU core” in 2025. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series is expected to crush Apple’s edge in CPU performance, thanks to the upcoming ARM Cortex-X5 CPU core.

Moor Insights and Strategy (via AndroidAuthority) reports that ARM is working on Cortex-X5 CPU core with codename Blackhawk. This CPU core is expected to be used by Samsung and MediaTek for their next flagship chips.

On the other hand, Qualcomm is expected to use its own-developed Oryon CPU core in Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor. With new chip architecture, the next Snapdragon is likely to offer outstanding performance and efficiency.

ARM’s Cortex-X5 CPU core could be used in the 3nm Exynos 2500 mobile platform, which will power most Galaxy S25 phones. The remaining Galaxy S25 units will use the 3nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, featuring new Oryon CPU core.

Apple’s iPhone remains about two generations ahead in CPU performance over Android flagships. Chips used in iPhones also use ARM cores, but they are being designed on custom architecture and advanced manufacturing.
