Apple recently postponed the autonomous EV “Apple Car” debut to 2028, but it appears to be quietly accelerating related research. A recent Washington Post article reveals that Apple’s test distance of autonomous cars exceeded 450,000 miles between December 2022 to November 2023.

WP analyzed the test distance records of self-driving cars driving on California roads from December 2022 to November 2023. The analysis indicates that Apple’s driving distance was a total of 450,000 miles (approximately 724,200 km).

This is over 3x more than the previous year and is the largest increase in mileage among major companies testing autonomous EVs in California. The rapid increase in driving range suggests that Apple has quietly been increasing its ambitions for autonomous driving tech.

Per the California Department of Motor Vehicles, a total of 38 companies have received permits to conduct autonomous driving testing in the region. Among these, the company with the longest test-driving distance last year was Waymo, owned by Google/Alphabet.
