Google aims to enhance WebView’s stability and security in Android 15

Google is bringing on a new Project Mainline module in Android 15 called WebViewBootstrap. This module will allow Google to directly update the code for the core WebView APIs, as well as add some new resilience features that can automatically detect and repair WebView when it fails to start.

Android WebView is a system component that allows apps to display web content within their own windows. However, WebView sometimes stops working or has problems that can make apps not work well or cause trouble for the entire device.

In the past, Google has faced issues with WebView causing widespread app crashes across various devices and brands. To prevent this from happening again, Google has been updating WebView through the Google Play Store.

However, Google still relies on OEMs to update some parts of WebView, such as the core framework APIs that apps use to integrate WebView. This means that some devices may not receive the latest patches and features for WebView, that’s why Google is preparing the WebViewBootstraps module with Android 15.

WebViewBootstrap is expected to launch with Android 15, but it may be optional for OEMs to include it in their builds. Google plans to make it mandatory in Android 16, which will ensure that all devices have the same version of WebView and benefit from its enhanced stability and security.
