Samsung SDI set to begin solid-state batteries mass production in 2027
On March 06, 2024, Samsung SDI officially confirmed that it will begin mass production of its solid-state batteries for electric vehicles and other applications in 2027. However, the South Korean tech giant also settled a supply deal for electric vehicle batteries with Hyundai Motor back in October 2023.
Going toward the details, Samsung Electronics at the InterBattery trade show in Seoul, summarized a plan to begin mass production of high-performance solid-state batteries in 2027 with an energy density of 900 watt-hours per liter, and a 40% improvement from its lithium-ion cells.
The report further indicates that the Samsung SDI will set its production plans for 2027, including how many batteries it makes and where based on demand. Also, the mass production of the new solid-state batteries will begin with the aim of offering a higher and more improved performance.
Solid-state batteries are widely considered the future of storage batteries. It offers short charging times and high energy density, which can extend the range of EVs. These batteries are also made lighter and safer than lithium-ion batteries, which contain a flammable electrolyte solution.
