Samsung Galaxy phones to increase use of Sony camera sensors: Report

Samsung has been in partnership with Sony for a long time and a recent report suggests that this collaboration will further go on and on. Because Sony is planning to move its image sensor back-end process from Japan to Korea, however, this will increase the use of Sony camera sensors in Galaxy phones.

According to the information, Sony considering relocating part of its image sensor production process to Korea. Simultaneously, the reason of moving its image sensor back-end process from Japan to Korea is to expand and strengthen the image sensors supplied to Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

To be mentioned, Sony is the manufacturer, that supplies image sensors for Samsung’s flagship Galaxy devices, and it is expected that the upcoming Galaxy S25 series will also use Sony camera sensors. Accordingly, this move to shift the image sensor back-end process to Korea will also boost their collaboration.

It’s also worth mentioning that, Sony is the world’s number 1 company in making image sensors. However, the firm expects that the domestic semiconductor back-end industry, including semiconductor packaging and inspection, will have a significant impact on the supply of sensors for Galaxy phones.

An industry official familiar with the matter said,

  • Samsung’s MX division is encouraging competition by mixing image sensors made by its system LSI division with Sony products in smartphones, and Sony is expanding its back-end process to Korea in order to respond more actively to its customers. “I understand that they are planning to proceed with it,” he said.
