In January 2024, Samsung released the Galaxy S24 series with several upgraded features and capabilities, but the device still uses the old fingerprint sensor. It means the fingerprint recognition sensor used in Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is Qualcomm’s 2nd generation 3D Sonic sensor and not the 3D Sonic Max.

As per the report, Samsung has been using Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint recognition sensor since the launch of the Galaxy S10 series, and it has been significantly upgraded in the newly released Galaxy S24 series. The Galaxy S24 is equipped with Qualcomm’s second-generation 3D Sonic sensor.

Hence, the Ultra model of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series uses the ultimate fingerprint recognition sensor but it’s not the upgraded 3D Sonic Max which was further tipped to be equipped in Galaxy S23 Ultra. Suprema applied an AI-based fingerprint analysis algorithm that efficiently recognizes the abundant fingerprint information.

The report further states that BioSign 6.0 installed in the Galaxy S24 series has significantly improved user convenience with improved fingerprint recognition speed and security compared to the previous version, 5.0.

Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max

Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Max is the world’s biggest and most advanced fingerprint scanner that has a surface area of 20mm x 30mm – a scanning area of two fingers. This is around 10x the size of the 3D Sonic Gen 2 scanner used in the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S22 Ultra, and Galaxy S23 Ultra.
