Samsung to hurt TSMC as AMD considers 3nm GAA orders

Samsung Foundry may get 3nm GAA orders from AMD for its next-gen products. At ITF World 2024, AMD CEO hinted at the potential adoption of Samsung Foundry’s 3nm GAA process. If everything goes well, AMD orders would give a major push to Samsung to chase TSMC.

According to BusinessKorea, the South Korean tech giant will likely intensify its collaboration with AMD to compete with TSMC in the Foundry market. CEO Lisa Su announced AMD’s plans to mass-produce new products using 3nm GAA process.

Pay attention: Samsung is the sole vendor that has adopted GAA technology at the 3nm process node. As compared to FinFET, the advanced GAA (Gate-All-Around) process is said to offer improved data processing speed and power efficiency.

The statement by AMD CEO formalizes the continuous collaboration with Samsung. The companies are also expected further to strengthen their partnership in the AI semiconductor sector. Notably, AMD has expertise in central processing units and graphics processing units.

It’s worth noting that Samsung was the first Foundry vendor to mass-produce the 3nm process using GAA technology in 2022. However, previous concerns with yield and power efficiency hurt its sales as it failed to win orders from industry leaders.

An industry insider stated, “For Samsung, the collaboration with AMD represents an opportunity to open the floodgates in chasing TSMC in the foundry sector.”

New Galaxy AI features are set to debut with the One UI 6.1.1. These functionalities will also be provided to some older models including the Galaxy S24 series. It is expected that the AI Draw feature will be limited to Galaxy phones that support S Pen stylus.

AI Draw may allow users to make drawings with the power of artificial intelligence. A custom sticker creator is expected to be offered within it. AI would also make it easier and more convenient to draw shapes and straight lines which is not easy with S Pen.

Many AI-assisted drawing tools are already out there in the market. You can start with a sketch or idea and the AI helps you refine it or complete it. It’s like a boon for those who have no professional drawing knowledge but want to utilize and learn through AI.
