Wear OS Is Future: Samsung begins sunsetting Tizen Galaxy Watch
The Galaxy Watch 3 was Samsung’s last Tizen OS-powered smartwatch. With the Galaxy Watch 4, the company abandoned its OS from the wearable segment and partnered with Google for Wear OS. Now, Samsung is preparing to sunset the Tizen Galaxy Watch era.
Back in 2021, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Watch 4 series. These smartwatches kickstarted the company’s collaboration with Google for the Wear OS. Beyond that, both firms are also working to expand apps and watchface functionalities for a better user experience.
As the fourth generation of Wear OS Galaxy Watch line coming this July, Samsung is taking major steps for Tizen watches. Putting an end to a sizzling era under Samsung’s roof, Tizen OS will lose full support by 2025, with changes starting to take place in May itself.
Timeline for various termination dates
- September 30, 2024: The Galaxy Store will stop selling paid Tizen watch content, including apps, watch faces, and more.
- May 31, 2025: Galaxy Store will stop allowing new downloads of free Tizen watch content.
- September 30, 2025: The “My Apps” section in the Galaxy Store will stop allowing re-downloads, effectively ending the ability to access any further paid or free Tizen content.
Pay attention, changes notified by Samsung will affect Galaxy Gear smartwatches, Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Watch Active, and Galaxy Watch Active 2. Smartwatches running Wear OS won’t have any changes in functionality or usability across segments.
