Google Pay (GPay) shuts down in the US
Google officially shuts down GPay, making it inaccessible in the US. This isn’t a sudden decision as the company has formally announced the phased discontinuation of its payments platform.
Back in 2020, Google introduced GPay to “make money simple, secure, and helpful” with plans for a “mobile-first bank account.” The presence of the Wallet app didn’t let Google Pay grow as rapidly as other payment platforms.
Last week, GPay automatically signed US users out, confirming the termination. Attempting to log in explains how: “The Google Pay US app is no longer available. You can still tap to pay using the Google Wallet app.”
By ditching the GPay, Google wants to prioritize its Wallet platform in the country. Rather than payment functionality, Google Wallet is capable of digitizing everything in your physical wallet.
The company is also working to expand the availability of Google Wallet. To do so, it is continuously partnering with banks and credit card companies so more and more users can have access to digital wallet.
