Bixby will equip Samsung AI models slated to launch this year. At the Unpacked yesterday, Samsung’s TM Roh confirmed that a major upgrade to Bixby is coming this year. It will use Samsung’s own large language model for artificial intelligence capabilities.

Samsung first introduced the Bixby assistant in 2017. The company made gradual improvements and integrated with core Samsung services. However, it failed to be a popular alternative to Google Assistant on Galaxy.

Later, the arrival of ChatGPT and Gemini AI further widened the gap. Now, there’s a need of rapid upgrades to Galaxy’s Bixby assistant. It seems Samsung is looking at this aspect and a significant upgrade is arriving on its self-developed digital assistant.

“We’re going to advance Bixby with application of Gen AI technology,” Roh said in Korean via a translator.

Previously, there were rumors of the arrival of an upgraded Bixby Assistant. However, it’s the first time the news has been confirmed by a Samsung executive. The confirmation is pretty solid as the statement has been made by Samsung’s Mobile Chief, TM Roh.

“We are reinforcing and bringing more AI capabilities to our products,” Roh said.

Apple has recently announced Apple Assistant and upgrades to Siri Assistant. The company has partnered with OpenAI for AI features in iOS and iPhones. It seems Samsung won’t let Apple easily occupy the AI smartphone market with even minor areas.

“As consumers use more AI capabilities they can actually feel the convenience and benefits they bring. I believe strongly that these Galaxy AI, mobile AI are strong motivations and drivers for the purchase of new products.”

Yesterday, Samsung introduced new Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. These phones run the Android 14-based One UI 6.1.1 software skin. It’s packed with advanced artificial inelligence capabilities and Generative AI features.
