Samsung Galaxy S24 One UI 6.1.1 update

Samsung reportedly plans to reimagine mobile phones for the AI era. TM Roh, President of Samsung Mobile Division, signaled new form factors that better fulfill artificial intelligence needs and Generative AI functions.

A new generation of “AI phones” by Samsung would look “radically different” from standard phones. Dr Roh believes that a successful implementation would make the “AI phones” more “mobile” and could have more sensors and bigger screens.

Samsung’s Mobile Prez revealed that a “lion’s share” of mobile phone R&D is now redirected at AI phones. When asked by the interviewer of Australia’s AFR, Roh didn’t share what form factors Samsung was specifically looking at.

“The ‘ion’s share’ of Samsung’s mobile phone research and development was now directed towards ‘AI phones’, which may turn out to be radically different from Samsung’s existing phones, said TM Roh.

Samsung Galaxy AI

Earlier this year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S24 series as its first AI phones. The recently launched Galaxy foldables have joined the AI phone segment. These devices feature the Gemini Nano model developed by Google for on-device AI.

The Korean tech giant could be exploring ways to revolutionize AI on mobile. As AI makes tasks simpler than imagination, the hardware segment could see a breakthrough. However, it would take years to commercialize as the R&D phase takes too long.

Being the world’s largest phone vendor, Samsung continues to stay ahead of the competition. The company doesn’t miss its schedule of releasing new flagship phones. The recently released wearable devices are also equipped with futuristic technologies.

Samsung might also consider bringing a tri-fold foldable smartphone. The slidable display device is also said to have a presence in Samsung’s product pipeline. However, the commercialization stage is yet to be achieved by these new form factors.

James is the lead content creator on Sammy Fans and mostly works on Samsung's firmware section. His first phone was the Galaxy S4 and continues to get new S series devices. Most of the time, James tries to learn about new technologies and gadgets but he also sneaks a bit of free time to nearby rivers and nature.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Z Fold 4 Beige

Samsung issued a confusing response over the One UI 6.1.1 query for Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4. Similar to the Galaxy AI rollout earlier this year, Samsung has excluded the Galaxy S22, Z Fold 4, and Z Flip 4 flagships released in 2022.

A Korean moderator recently confirmed select features are indeed coming to 2022 flagship devices. However, Samsung’s response to a consumer’s query related to One UI 6.1.1 distribution for Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 leaves at a confusing spot.

Recently, a Samsung consumer asked if their Galaxy Z Fold 4 would receive the One UI 6.1.1 update. The company’s response suggests that currently there is no plan for AI features rollout for 2022 models, but the decision is yet to be made.

However, the customer’s request for the update has been noted and will be considered for future updates. The response highlights that there is no official update schedule yet and not all requested features can be included due to limitations.

Samsung expanded Galaxy AI features to S22, Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 earlier this year. The company is highly likely to have the same approach this time. Meanwhile, Samsung is acknowledging the customer’s request but cannot guarantee an update.

Here’s what the response reads (translated):

We understand that you’ve been curious about this while using the product.

After checking with the relevant departments regarding your inquiry, we regret to inform you that we are unable to provide an exact answer as there is currently no official announcement regarding the One UI 6.1.1 update schedule for the Galaxy Z Fold4.

Samsung September 2024 update plan

Samsung Galaxy S22 seems ineligible for the One UI 6.1.1 update. The company yesterday announced the expansion of the new OS to older Galaxy devices. The Galaxy S24 started getting it, while the S23 series will join the party on September 12.

Korean community moderator revealed One UI 6.1.1 camera and gallery features for the Galaxy S22 series. While the entire suite of Galaxy AI isn’t confirmed, for now, consumers will be getting pretty much content from Samsung’s book.

Galaxy S22 series will get enhanced Live effects, Motion Clipper, Portrait Studio, Sketch to Image, and Overlay Translation. These are the features that will also be available on Galaxy flagships launched in 2023 and 2024.

One UI 6.1.1 features arriving on S22 series

1) Live effects: You can enjoy photos with people and animals in them in three dimensions.

2) Motion Clipper: You can create moving stickers and GIFs by long-pressing on a Motion Photo to select it.

3) Portrait studio: You can save your photos by selecting from a variety of styles through AI generation.

4) Sketch to Image: You can add a sketch drawn on top of your photo by creating an image.

5) Overlay Translation: The company provides natural translation results by maintaining the text and background color of the original image and improving readability by overlaying it on the image.

It’s worth noting that the Korean tech giant hasn’t announced the release date for the S22 series. However, the new features will likely be distributed as part of the September 2024 update rollout for eligible models sequentially.
