Microsoft MR (mixed reality) device will feature Samsung OLEDoS. The company is expected to launch its mixed-reality device by 2026. The confirmation will arrive only after the finalization of the OLEDoS specifications.

TheElec sources claim that Samsung Display signed a contract with Microsoft to develop and supply OLEDoS (OLED on silicon) for MR (mixed reality) device. Samsung is said to have orders to supply hundreds of thousands of units.

In late 2023, the Korean display maker established a team under M Project, which focuses on developing OLEDoS tech. The M stands for micro as in microdisplay, small displays aimed at use in reality devices.

Microsoft was developing the MR device for use in games and multimedia content like movies rather than the Metaverse. The MR device is expected to launch only after the specification of the OLEDoS is finalized.

Once done, Samsung will supply the OLEDoS to Microsoft, with a launch expected by 2026. Notably, the Display division is closely working with Samsung’s System LSI division in the development of OLEDoS.

Samsung System LSI designs the silicon board for OLEDoS. The wafer is manufactured by Samsung Foundry, and then delivered to Samsung Display, where it deposits organic material on the wafers and makes them go through encapsulation.

Interestingly, the report notes that Samsung MX Division rejected Samsung D’s OLEDoS. The Galaxy XR could be equipped with Sony’s OLEDoS solution, leading the Display business to secure Microsoft as its client for potential MX Division supply.
