Samsung is continuously expanding its latest security patch to Galaxy devices. The August 2024 security update brings a crucial patch for a bug affecting the Xclipse GPU driver on the Galaxy S24, S24 Plus, and A54 5G.

The August 2024 update changelog doesn’t mention the inclusion of a crucial patch. After digging deeper into details, I’ve found that the release brings a fix to a serious issue related to Galaxy S24, S24 Plus, and A54 5G’s Xclipse GPU driver.

Samsung notes that Samsung Semiconductor has also included a few patches in the August update. In particular, the details page mentions a high-level flaw entitled CVE-2024-3196, which is linked to an Xclipse AMD GPU driver reference count.

Exynos 2200 also features Xclipse GPU, however, the bug affects newer variants: Exynos 1480 and Exynos 2400. The former powers the Galaxy A54 mid-range, while the latter is used in the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus flagships.

To prevent your device from this bug, make sure to install the August release as soon as it arrives. The impact of such vulnerabilities isn’t always visible but it could lead your device’s data and your privacy to unwanted happenings.

Galaxy’s latest SMR package includes patches from Google and Samsung. Beyond that, Samsung also provides 14 SVE items to improve confidence in Galaxy devices. You can access the list and chart of all the CVEs and SVEs included in the August release here.
