Google Messages aims to replace Samsung Messages on older phones

Older Samsung phones pushing Google Messages to be the default texting app. Earlier this year, Samsung announced select new Galaxy phones will come with Google Messages as their pre-installed messaging application.

Some Galaxy S21, S20, and S22 users report that the recent software update aims to replace Samsung Messages with Google Messages. Following the boot screen, a prompt encourages Galaxy users to make Google Messages default.

Older Galaxy phone owners reported that they’re being prompted to switch to Google Messages. The prompt just offers them to make Google Messages their default texting app, rather than restricting access to Samsung Messages.

Samsung Messages is a feature-rich application for SMS and texting. It’s also equipped with RCS capabilities, which is the biggest plus point of Google Messages. However, the swap seems to be a strategic shift aligned to an agreement or so.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 come with Google Messages for texting. The company has been shipping Google’s variant in the US for a few years. The company’s move would accelerate the adoption of the RCS standard.
