New Samsung Quantum Dot innovation could transform QD-OLEDs

Published

on

Samsung Display successfully developed a quantum dot ink recycling tech. The company believes this technological innovation is aimed at enhancing the cost competitiveness of its QD-OLED displays.

The Korean display maker also plans to improve equipment performance and process capabilities to increase productivity and yield. QD ink regeneration technology is groundbreaking but it isn’t the only way to increase competitiveness.

QD ink regeneration technology

Samsung managed to recover and reprocess 80% of the ink that went unutilized in the production of the QD emissive layer. This was made possible through the development of tech to collect and recycle QD ink wasted during the QD-OLED manufacturing process.

This achievement is expected to bring annual cost savings of over $7.3 million (approximately KRW 10 billion). The QD light-emitting layer is formed using inkjet printing that densely sprays red and green QD ink through micro nozzles in micrometer sizes.

Any QD ink left in the nozzles was previously discarded, accounting for approximately 20% of the total QD ink used in the process. With its QD-OLED receiving rave reviews, Samsung Display is using more QD ink than ever before.

“By developing this groundbreaking technology that recycles high-quality QD ink in-house, we will significantly contribute not only to cost reduction but also to resource recycling,” Samsung Display said.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition sparked a frenzy across Korea and sold out within 10 minutes. The company announced that the first stock of the new foldable sold out in less than 10 minutes.

The first Galaxy Z Fold SE sale started on October 25, with a 7-hour delay. There were rumors of quality concerns, which were untrue. Samsung was reportedly conducting a quantity assessment, leading it to open the sale by a few hours.

Within 10 minutes after sales started, Samsung announced that “all available stock has sold out.” The company plans to prepare additional stock and resume sales, however, a specified time hasn’t been disclosed.

Samsung also intended to supply devices to carriers that day but failed to do so given stock shortages. The craze for the Special Edition model is clearly visible and Koreans give a warm welcome to the epic innovation.

Special Edition…

The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, at 10.6mm in thickness and 236 grams in weight, is the thinnest and lightest foldable phone from Samsung. It is 1.5 mm thinner and 3 grams lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which was unveiled last July.

Sale Delayed…

On October 21, the South Korean tech giant announced that the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition would be sold starting at 9 AM (Korea time). However, the device didn’t go on sale after 9 AM, while sales only began at 4 PM, seven hours later.

A Samsung representative explained, “The delay was due to time needed to assess production quantities and decide on the amount to release.” They denied speculations that sales were delayed due to quality concerns.

Google is reportedly working to integrate Circle to Search with Lens. This way, all smartphones, regardless of platform, will be able to utilize the AI-powered search feature. However, Apple now has its own visually rich screen search feature.

The recently released iOS 18.2 Beta comes with a new “What’s on your screen?” feature powered by ChatGPT. The developer beta build brings Apple’s Visual Intelligence to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

How it works:

  • iPhone users can ask Siri to analyze what’s on the screen. The assistant will then take a screenshot, letting you pass it over to ChatGPT for visual analysis.
