WhatsApp to soon makes it easier to manage your chat backup size
WhatsApp may be more popular than Telegram, but it is not as rich as its competitors. Slowly but surely, Facebook’s messaging service has been adding new features to the platform, with hidden chat backups, multi-device support, voice messaging, and more in the build. Recently, WABetaInfo has now discovered another new feature developed for WhatsApp for Android – how to control backup size.
The full chat backup size of surviving WhatsApp users can easily fit into a few GBs. An obvious way to reduce this is by not saving media files with chat history, which may not be acceptable to everyone.
The forthcoming “Manage backup size” option will give users granular controls over their WhatsApp chat backups and allow them to archive important file types such as photos, documents, videos, and audio. WhatsApp will also provide an exact database of your chat database based on your backup options.

There could be another reason why WhatsApp works on this feature. WhatsApp backups in Google Drive currently do not count against your account share.
However, WABetaInfo believes this could change in the future, Google only offers up to 2GB of free space per user for WhatsApp chat backups. This means that large backups can be partially dependent compared to your Google Account storage portion.
Google has been having trouble providing free storage recently. It killed the free Google photo storage program earlier this year despite its popularity and usage. With WhatsApp being used by more than 2 billion users worldwide, we would not be surprised if Google did the same for WhatsApp chat backups.
WhatsApp has released a new feature named Voice Message Transcripts, which allows users to transcribe voice messages into text. This update, announced by Mark Zuckerberg, is now available in the latest WhatsApp for Android.
The voice message transcripts feature is a helpful tool for people who prefer reading over listening to messages, or for those in noisy places where listening to voice notes is difficult.

To start using voice message transcripts, you’ll need to download a language data package. At the moment, the feature supports English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Hindi. WhatsApp also plans to add more languages in the future. Once the transcriptions are done directly on your phone, you don’t need an internet connection to use the feature.

Notably, not all users will see this new camera shortcut. If you still have the camera shortcut in the chat bar, you won’t see the one in the gallery sheet. This is to avoid clutter and make the app more organized.
This feature is currently available to a limited number of beta testers, and it will be rolled out to more users in the coming days or weeks.
