OnePlus Open

OnePlus Open is officially launched today and its spec sheet puts Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 to shame in a lot of aspects. Starting the original Galaxy Fold, Samsung has launched the fifth generation of its foldable phone this year, which left in dust against the first foldable by OnePlus.

Various phone makers entered the Global market with their foldable products, however, Samsung has remained the unbeatable leader so far. This year, the company got its first real competitor – the Pixel Fold by Google, and Open, the second rival went official today by OnePlus.

OnePlus Open x Galaxy Z Fold 5 (Specs)

OnePlus Open foldable phone comes with a 6.3-inch AMOLED cover display and a 7.82-inch foldable AMOLED screen. Both panels feature a 120Hz refresh rate and 2,800 nits of peak brightness, beating the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in peak brightness with a huge margin.

Similar to the Galaxy S23 series and Galaxy Z Fold/Flip 5 phones, the OnePlus Open gets the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC’s overclocked variant. This makes the new foldable phone equivalent to Galaxy flagships that are equipped with Qualcomm’s first “for Galaxy” chipset.

OnePlus Open Specs

Interestingly, the OnePlus Open brings 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage, however, you can get a 1TB variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The device has a triple rear camera setup with 48MP main, 48MP ultra-wide, and 64MP 3x telephoto cameras.

In addition, the Open equips 20MP and 32MP front-facing cameras on the inner and outer screen respectively. To be noted, the first OnePlus foldable lacks the advanced under-display camera technology, which Samsung debuted with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in 2021.

Open by OnePlus is equipped with a 4,805 mAh battery that can charge at 80W. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5, on the other hand, has a 4,400 mAh battery and charges at 25W. In terms of dimensions, Open measures just 5.8 mm in thickness when it’s open. LOL, S Pen isn’t here!

Importantly, the IPX8 rating is a plus point on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Flip smartphones, making them able to survive in the water. OnePlus Open, on the other side, has IPX4 water resistance, meaning it’s only protected against splashes.

OnePlus Open focuses on the Indian market, with the company also introducing it in the US. The device costs $1,699 in the US, just $100 less than the Galaxy Z Fold 5. This would end up with OnePlus forgetting about selling the Open like hotcakes due to no aggressive pricing.

The software part is unquestionably not capable of matching what Samsung’s One UI offers!

Huawei tri-fold foldable

Huawei is all set to launch the world’s first tri-fold foldable smartphone. The company just dropped a bombing teaser, confirming its mega launch event. This massive development comes when Samsung stalls and Apple remains foldable-free.

Samsung showcased tri-fold screen prototype devices on many occasions. It was expected to debut the world’s first triple-screen foldable smartphone. However, Huawei is all set to attain this crown beating Samsung and other vendors.

Huawei confirmed its next hardware launch event taking place on September 10. It’s right a day after Apple’s iPhone 16 unveiling scheduled for September 9. Tri-fold could significantly harm Apple’s presence in the Chinese market.

In addition, Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman – Yu Chengdong said the company’s most leading, innovative, and disruptive product is coming.

“After 5 years of persistence and investment, we have turned science fiction into reality. Please look forward to Huawei’s pinnacle work!”

Huawei tri-fold foldable

Tri-fold concept previously showcased a device having screens on three sides. The phone will have two hinges, allowing users to expand all three displays. The current foldable features a single hinge in the middle, offering a tablet-like screen size.

Beyond that, the tri-fold phone would offer an even larger screen in a more portable size. Software-derived features could further enhance usability, with one panel being used as a keyboard and others as screen and standing support.

Durability still remains the main concern in this kind of innovative device. Foldable phones launched by Samsung and Huawei are gradually entering the mainstream. However, consumers still refrain from preferring foldable as their next upgrade.

Huawei’s tri-fold could remain a China-exclusive product. Samsung may also come up with its tri-fold handset in the near future. The Display department has worked enough on the panel, but the Mobile division hasn’t yet approved development.
